The Method

How We Calculate Your Result

Two different calculations power this tool, depending on the mode you use.

Height Percentile (Z-Score Method)

Z = (Your Height − Population Mean) ÷ Standard Deviation Percentile = Normal Distribution(Z) × 100

We use approximate adult height mean and standard deviation figures by gender and region, based on published population health studies.

Child Height Predictor (Mid-Parental Method)

Boy's predicted height = (Father's cm + Mother's cm + 13) ÷ 2 Girl's predicted height = (Father's cm + Mother's cm − 13) ÷ 2 Target range = Predicted height ± 8.5 cm

This is the widely used mid-parental height method. It's a statistical estimate, not a guarantee — actual adult height depends on nutrition, health, and genetics beyond parental height.

Worked Example

Step-by-Step Example

A father who is 178 cm and a mother who is 163 cm, predicting for a son.

1
Add parents' heights: 178 + 163 = 341 cm
2
Add 13 cm for a boy: 341 + 13 = 354 cm
3
Divide by 2: 354 ÷ 2 = 177 cm predicted height
4
Apply the range: 177 ± 8.5 cm = 168.5 cm to 185.5 cm likely adult height

Tips for Measuring Height Accurately

Measure in the Morning

Height can be 1-2 cm shorter by evening due to spinal compression during the day.

Stand Against a Flat Wall

Heels, buttocks and shoulder blades touching the wall gives the most accurate reading.

Remove Shoes and Headwear

Even thin soles can add 1-2 cm to your measured height.

Look Straight Ahead

Keep your line of sight level (the Frankfurt plane) rather than tilting your chin up or down.

Use a Rigid Measuring Tool

A stadiometer or a flat book pressed to the wall gives a more reliable mark than a flexible tape alone.

Measure Multiple Times

Take two or three measurements and use the average to improve the accuracy of your final height.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

The mid-parental method is a well-established statistical estimate, generally accurate within about ±8.5 cm for 68% of children. Nutrition, health conditions, and puberty timing can all shift actual adult height within or beyond that range.
A percentile shows what percentage of a comparable population you are taller than. For example, being in the 80th percentile means you're taller than roughly 80% of people of your gender in that population.
Average height differences between countries are largely driven by genetics, nutrition during childhood, and overall public health — populations with better childhood nutrition tend to average taller adult heights.
Most people stop growing taller between 16-18 for females and 18-21 for males, once growth plates in the bones fully fuse — though this varies by individual.
The mid-parental method used here is designed to estimate a child's eventual adult height using both parents' heights, and can be used at any age before growth is complete.
Height itself isn't a direct health marker, though unusually short or tall stature for one's age and family background can sometimes be worth discussing with a doctor, particularly in children.
Spinal discs compress slightly under gravity throughout the day, which can make you measure 1-2 cm shorter by evening. Morning measurements are generally more consistent.
For adult height, the mean and median are very close since height is roughly normally distributed, so we use mean-based figures for our percentile calculation.
Genetics account for a large share (often cited around 80%) of height variation, but childhood nutrition, illness, and overall health also play a meaningful role.
Divide centimetres by 2.54 to get total inches, then divide by 12 for feet, with the remainder as inches. Or use the unit toggle in our calculator above for an instant conversion.
